I have finalyl started the Ashtanga Picture Project. Go here to Join the Movement
This is straight from the About Page:
The mission of the Ashtanga Picture Project is to demystify the practice of Ashtanga Yoga by providing a visual representation of Ashtangis from all walks of life doing their practice.
Our goals are:
- To illustrate that anyone can practice Ashtanga Yoga
- To remove intimidation by showing people of all levels doing the practice
- To show that Ashtanga poses are expressed differently based on the needs of the student
- To share the beauty of the practice
The Ashtanga Picture Project, aka the APP, was started by me, Shanna Small. As an 11 year practitioner of Ashtanga , I have experienced first hand how intimidated people are after researching Ashtanga on the internet. Whenever I speak to anyone about Ashtanga,99% of the time, these common assumptions come up:
Ashtanga is for fit people
Ashtanga is for young people. While you can do Ashtanga into middle age, you had to have started when young
You have to be able to do all the poses….just to start Ashtanga
You have to be flexible
You have to do the full versions of poses and there are no modifications.
Ashtanga is only for people with certain body types
Ashtanga is contortion
Ashtanga is only for people interested in doing contortion
The majority of the people who made these comments had never even practiced Ashtanga. So where was all this misinformation coming from? The yoga grapevine and the media(internet, books, videos).
The Ashtanga misinformation grapevine is usually not ran by Ashtangis. It is very rare for me to meet someone who has actually maintained a 4-6 day a week practice for more then a year that dislikes Ashtanga. Most of the negativity surrounding Ashtanga comes from people who got their toe wet but never really jumped into the pool. This website addresses this issue through educational posts, links and resources.
The main objective of this website is to address the second source of misinformation which is assumptions based on images in the media. This site will show that, as Pattabhi Jois said, anybody can practice Ashtanga….except lazy man. Through community involvement, this website will show people from all walks of life doing their practice. It will show that Ashtangis are mothers, fathers, old, young, big small, all ethnicities and body types.
The APP will inspire you to let go of any preconceived notions and get on the mat!
