Yesterday, I wrote a post about the business perspective of why companies like Lululemon, may chose not to create sizes over 12. I got a few comments and I have read responses that all have one common theme, "I feel uncomfortable in yoga classes because of my size and I need the world to make me feel better about this". That is not the purpose of yoga.
Yoga Citti Vritti Nirodha is from the Yoga Sutras and it means that yoga is stilling the mind. Yoga is not about other people validating you, it is about you validating yourself. Your real self, conscious awareness. It is not about validating your past, societies standards, your negative self talk, your vanity, or your ego. You do this by learning how to let go of the thoughts in your mind that are not serving you. If you come to class with a lot of trepidations about your weight based on past experiences, yoga is an opportunity to let those go.
The real work is finding inner peace that is generated from your own light and is not dependent on others. It is knowing that you cannot be reduced by others thoughts about you or by your past unless you allow it. It is taking total control of what goes on in your mind, and realizing that even though the actions of the people who taunted you in the past is their problem, the thoughts you constantly play through your mind about the experience, is yours.
